Dataset:Kills, Name:visukil
  • Brushing and Linking works well and is clear
  • Tranparency
  • Own dataset used
  • Different color modes are an interesting idea
  • Animation between times works well
  • Good documentation
  • Pie chart labels are in the wrong place
  • Colors are too harsh (saturated)
  • Pie charts disappear sometimes when clicked
  • Would have been nice to have a linking back from the pie chart to the map to highlight red or blue regions individually

Dataset: cars
  • Good implementation of scatterdice and excentric labeling
  • Good documentation
  • The map as an entry point does not make too much sense. Small countries can be easily missed
  • Interactions are not very intuitively mapped and require a lot of mouse buttons and key presses
  • The color coding for the labels in the scatterplot is unclear
  • Not a whole lot of novelty in this project, basically a reimplementation of existing techniques
3
Attach:File:i3.png Δ Δ
Dataset:movies
  • The popup details are always visible
  • Data pre-grouped in order to reduce the number of categories
  • Readability of the legend
  • Lack of interaction, there is not much to do here besides hovering over points
  • More dimensions could have been encoded
  • A qualitative color scale from color brewer would have been nicer. The yellow is almost impossible to see here and some other colors are too harsh in contrast to the background

Data: Wikipedia Edits
  • The axis and fonts are well chosen
  • popup inspector is a good idea
  • good instructions
  • there is not a whole lot of interactivity here, when zoomed in it is not clear that there is data outside of the current view
  • I can't find information on which articles the edits belong to. It is unclear what I learn from knowing that lots of articles starting with a certain letter have been edited.
  • A zoom in on the y axis would have been important here
  • There is a lot of missing data that could have been displayed

Data: Happiness

  • Good color choices
  • Creative and novel use of the data in combination to new data
  • Interesting views selected to show us the data
  • Nice interactive widgets in combination with the legend to filter the views
  • Good documentation
  • The units displayed in the pies are unclear, a legend is missing (is it hours of the day?)
  • Circular axes going around the center could have helped to compare far away countries

Data: WVS Cultural Map of the World

  • The additional libraries are well integrated
  • Instructions provided
  • The glyphs (upper and lower arc) are impossible to read at the given size and don't become bigger as one zooms into the data.
  • It is possible to zoom far into the data, way beyond any reasonable level for the data displayed
  • The interactions provided come from external libraries and hardly anything is provided beyond those
  • No legend provided
  • The labels interfere with reading the glyphs

Data: World Value Survey Cultural Map
  • Two data display options
  • Legend shows possible interactions on screen
  • Instructions provided
  • The colors have too high a saturation and are very harsh
  • The wave dimension could have been removed from the parallel coordinates plot (PCP) as the same information is already encoded by color
  • The data should have been optimized for the PCP. For example the countries are alphabetically ordered but should have been reordered to form clearer clusters. The current plot shows mostly spaghetti as it is ordered now
  • Software crashed when clicking on an empty area in the scatterplot
  • Additional metadata is necessary to see clusters of countries in the scatterplot (e.g. continents)
8

Data: cars data set
  • Use of transparency on the parallel coordinates plot
  • Several filter options
  • No legend to explain the color codes
  • Order of axes seems random and cannot be changed
  • No selection on the plot, no additional metadata

Data: German towns and train scheduled
  • Very ambitious project with difficult datasets
  • Several interaction widgets implemented
  • System is quite responsive and smooth
  • Lots of possibility to extend this into a comprehensive tool
  • Map projection seems a bit compressed (values are probably a bit off)
  • The Red color scale is a bit harsh. Would recommend to use a sequential one from colorbrewer optimized for white background. In general there are too many colours on the screen (yellow above, three for the date selector, different highlight color on the right, green for the grid).
  • Thickness of the lines could encode the "ranking" of a train type (e.g. ICE>IR>RE)
10

Data: countries.csv and map
  • Humorous documentation provided
  • Country and indicator comparison well done
  • Background color coding in the scatterplot is an interesting idea
  • Red/cyan color scale ends with too much saturation
  • At least abbreviated indicator names would have been useful in the scatterplot matrix
11
Attach:File:11.png Δ Δ
Data: gini index (world bank data)
  • help page showing the interactions
  • good choice of color scale
  • chart to display overview for individual countries and comparison
  • several interactions implemented
  • something is wrong with the fonts
  • lots of keyboard shortcuts required for interaction
  • chart does not always display data and it is unclear why not (color shows up on the country)
12

Data: Worldbank, Gapminder, ILO
  • Several views and filter options
  • Good instructions
  • Several datasets combined
  • Interaction instructions shown on screen
  • In the starting view countries could have been connected by lines to see development better over time
  • No remapping of the axes
  • At startup one datapoint outside the y-axis (see screenshot)
  • Mapping of brightness to time progression is unclear (is older = lighter or older = darker), legend needed.

Data: Happiness in the EU
  • Simple detail-on-demand and filter options available
  • Instructions provided
  • A relatively minimalistic project, most interactions through the library and very little data visualized
  • No legend
  • Colour scale a bit too saturated at far end
14
Attach:File:14.png Δ Δ
Data: Cameras
  • Possibility to filter on a number of dimensions
  • Detail-on-demand for each camera
  • Readibility of the axes
  • Instructions provided
  • Color scale used unclear
  • Not possible to put different values on each axis
  • Scatterplot axes don't rescale with changed filter values (thus, filtering is pretty much useless to find a camera in the congested areas)
15
Attach:File:15.png Δ Δ
  • Very nice aesthetics
  • Zoom and pan is useful
  • Filter settings not clear - e.g. when selecting a continent the cars not from that continent should be greyed out in the brand selector
  • It is not clear whether the bar chart belongs to the left or right y-axis
  • Detail-on-demand does not seem to work on initial zoom level
  • Zoom steps a bit too steep
16
Attach:File:16.png Δ Δ

Data: movies

  • Several filter options
  • Scatterplot axes rescale when filter values are changed
  • Name selection works well
  • Filter values not shown
  • No way to distinguish different categories of movies
17
Attach:File:17.png Δ Δ
Data:HIV
  • Several datasets combined
  • Tracking countries features
  • Several interaction options
  • Multiple views
  • Bugs in the World and Region Evolution histogram
  • No legend to explain data glyphs and color opacity code. Also legend needed for size encoding in particular since the sizes can be changed.
  • Need to read instructions to know which keys to press for additional features
18
Attach:File:18.png Δ Δ

Data: Happiness

  • Generally good choice of colour (except for blue which does not have enough contrast in the legend)
  • Option to expand into regular bar chart
  • Very minimalistic interactions
  • Hidden keyboard interactions (need to read instructions)
  • Instructions unclear (hover a city name?)
19
Attach:File:19.png Δ Δ
Data: ranking algorithms
  • Scatterplot matrix with multiple views appropriate for first inspections into the problem (for real data analysis the tools should likely be expanded by additional features - e.g. exploration history etc.)
  • Reconsider the use of the + sign to identify points. Creates additional clutter and patterns that may not represent the clusters well
  • Transparency could show clusters well
  • Consider features for rearranging rows and cols for better comparison
