Exploratory Analysis and Research Questions for Gender Diversity

In this assignment we will continue to work on the question of gender diversity in the visualization community. In assignment 1 you worked on a dataset of first names. For this assignment you will make use of this dataset - and you are free to ask the other teams for their datasets to compare with and extend yours.

Your Task

The IEEE Visualization (VIS) community is overseen by the IEEE VIS Executive Committee (VEC). The VEC is responsible for policies that are put in place for the whole conference. Imagine now, that the VEC asks you to report on the issue of gender diversity in the visualization community. For this assignment I would like you to respond to this task by doing the following:

  1. Go back to your teams. In the team brainstorm a set of stakeholders in your analysis.
  2. Extend the authors file1 you created for the last assignment with a gender column in which you record the (likely) gender of the author. As an optional task you can also include a column in which you put the author's position on the paper (1 = first author, 2 = second author, ...)
  3. In Tableau put together the vispubdata dataset, the new file1 and file2.
  4. Perform an exploratory analysis and make a few simple observations about the dataset, the papers, authors, conferences, and gender (leave out the other columns such as affiliation, page count, abstracts for now)
  5. Instead of an interview or observation based stakeholder analysis I want you to go and read about similar analyses that have been done in other research fields. What kinds of gender-related questions are important to science, and in particular computer science and STEM. Imagine what the VEC could be interested in
  6. From the last two steps come up with 5 general questions your analysis report to the VEC could cover.

Each team should prepare 8 slides:

  • Slide 1: Your team name, names of team members, a title for your assignment
  • Slide 2: A list of stakeholders you brainstormed
  • Slide 3: A short list of the most important stakeholders you identified
  • Slide 4-8: A clearly stated gender-related analysis question & a reference where your question comes from (this could be and image from your exploratory analysis or a reference to a publication, video, etc.)

Be prepared the present your slides at the beginning of the tutorial on November 9th.
